· Appearance: White crystalline powder or fine crystals. Odorless, with a saline taste. Freely soluble in water (7.8 g/100 mL at 18 °C; 16.0 g/100 mL at 60 °C), practically insoluble in ethanol. Density 2.20 g/cm³. Begins to decompose at about 50 °C and decomposes completely at 270 °C, releasing carbon dioxide

Application

· Food & Beverage: Serves as a leavening agent and acidity regulator — the classic baking soda. Used in biscuits, cakes, bread, cookies and steamed products, where it releases CO₂ on heating to make the dough rise; also used as a CO₂ source and pH buffer in carbonated and effervescent drinks, and in powdered beverage mixes, jams and confectionery.

· Pharmaceutical & Medical: Acts as a fast-acting antacid that neutralizes excess gastric acid, and as a buffering agent. Applied in antacid tablets, effervescent tablets, sodium bicarbonate injection, dialysis and peritoneal dialysis solutions, and in correcting metabolic acidosis — also widely used as a pharmaceutical excipient and API.

· Personal Care & Oral Care: Used in toothpastes and tooth powders as a mild abrasive and whitening agent, in mouthwash as a pH buffer and breath freshener, and in bath salts, deodorants and skin-care products as a mild exfoliant and odor neutralizer.

· Detergent & Cleaning: A mild abrasive and natural deodorizer for household, kitchen and food-contact cleaning — found in scouring powders, drain cleaners, laundry boosters, dishwasher detergents and refrigerator/food-storage deodorizers.

· Animal Feed & Agriculture: Added to poultry and cattle feed as a rumen buffer and sodium source, improving feed conversion, eggshell strength and weight gain; also used to adjust soil pH, as a silage additive and in seed treatment.

· Industrial & Environmental: Extensively applied in flue gas desulfurization (FGD), dry-chemical fire extinguishers, leather tanning and dehairing, mineral flotation and ore processing, metallurgical flux, textile dyeing and fixation, rubber and plastics blowing agents, water treatment, and as a raw material for other chemicals.

· Others: Also employed in photography, tobacco processing, abrasives, and as a cleaning and buffering agent in various specialty formulations.
